Great Plains Energy Inc. has signed two power purchase agreements with Kansas wind farms scheduled to come online this year and next. The deals to buy 444 megawatts of power will boost wind capacity to about 25 percent of the company's generating portfolio, Kansas City-based Great Plains (NYSE: GXP) announced in a Tuesday release.

The deals to buy 444 megawatts of power will boost wind capacity to about 25 percent of the company's generating portfolio, Kansas City-based Great Plains (NYSE: GXP) announced in a Tuesday release.
In one deal, Great Plains will buy power from the 244-megawatt Pratt Wind Energy Center in Pratt County, Kan., which is scheduled to wrap up construction by Dec. 31. A subsidiary of Florida-based NextEra Energy Inc. owns the Pratt County wind farm.
In the other deal, a 20-year power purchase agreement with EDP Renewables, Great Plains will tap the 200-megawatt Prairie Queen wind farm, now under construction in Allen County, Kan., and scheduled for completion by May 31, 2019. The 200-megawatt plant will provide enough electricity to power about 32,800 homes a year.
The new plant will expand the wind power footprint for EDP Renewables to a total of 600 megawatts in Kansas. The company is based in Madrid, Spain.
Previously, Great Plains signed a power purchase agreement in 2014 for the 150-megawatt Slate Creek Wind Project in Kansas.)
